The Royals grew to almost 2000 members with a total of 31 competitive youth teams, over 800 youth house league players, 8 co-ed teams, 19 senior teams and 4 women’s house league teams.

Several Senior teams earned promotion for the 2009 Outdoor season. The Men’s Competitive Division 3 (MC3) Ukraina Royals, Men’s Recreational Division 2 (MR2) and Women’s’ Recreational Division 4 (WR4 Red) all earned to right to be promoted. The Women’s Premier team won their division and the Bob Rathwell Cup (formerly the Ottawa Cup). They also made it to the semi finals of the Ontario Cup. Several other Senior teams had strong results, finishing near the top of their respective divisions.

On the Youth side several teams had a successful year and will be moving up a division next year. For the first time since the formation of the Regional Division, the Ottawa Royals will have both a U12 Boys and U12 Girls entry at the Regional level. The U10 Boys Premier team won their division, topping all U10 Boys teams in the city. The U10 Girls Division 1 team won their division as did the U12 Girls White Division 1 team. The U14 Boys Division 1 team earned a hard fought first place in their division while the U18 Boys Premier team had a perfect season going 14-0-0. Honourable mention goes to the U14 Girls Regional and U17 Boys Regional teams that finished a strong second in their respective divisions.

At the Royals’ Annual General Meeting, held on October 26, 2008, the budget was approved with some changes to the Outdoor 2009 fees. Senior fees remain at 2008 levels except for an added $5 fee due to an OSA fee increase. Youth fees were increased slightly from 2008 levels. The increase is $15 across the board and is due to the aforementioned OSA fee increase and the addition of a number of club coaches.

The club coaches are senior, experienced Royals coaches who already work with their own team. This can involve as little as 2 or 3 hours field marshalling or a bigger commitment if you wish to help with registration, score keeping, convening or running a concession. As always the Ottawa Royals are looking for coaches, team managers, referees and committee members. Last year the Ottawa Royals Soccer Club held a very successful series of Community coaching sessions and we will be holding them again in the spring. Anyone interested in finding out more, should contact the club at admin@ottawaroyals.ca.

A new feature has been added to the online registration process for youth players. You will be able to order and pre-pay Loblaws grocery gift cards. The Loblaws gift card program is an excellent fundraiser for the club. Every dollar purchased earns the club between 2-5% depending on amount purchased and method of payment. The money earned from the sale of gift cards will be spent on youth programs such as winter development, spring training, coaching clinics and more. And the best part of this program is – it costs the members nothing. For every dollar spent you receive gift cards in the same amount. Loblaws gift cards can be used at: Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Independent Grocer, and other grocery chains outside the Ottawa area. Gift cards will be made available as soon as payment has been received.

The program, which is designed to move players showing potential from House League to the Competitive stream, was initiated in the fall of 2006 and had over 60 players (both boys and girls) participating in the first cycle. The program focuses on the U7, U8, and U9 age groups and helps make the jump from recreational to competitive soccer easier for both players and coaches.

Three age groups were included in the inaugural cycle of the program: U8 Boys, U9 Boys, and U9 girls. The most obvious indications of the initial success of the program are the current league standings. The success, however, goes deeper than just the numbers as the players developed both the skills and the game awareness that are essential to any good soccer player. The kids were also able to get to know each other better and keep in touch over the winter. This type of learning environment gave the players a great head start to the 2007 summer season.

Dean Flett, coach of the U9 Boys, had good things to say about the program: "[The program] certainly has worked out well for our team this year. The boys were already a solid bunch before we started the summer season because of the winter development. It certainly made my job easier." The team is currently on top of their division and tied for first in the city at the U9 level. They are also fresh off a gold medal performance at the Royals' Kickin' In The Capital tournament.

On the girls' side, the U9 A team is currently in 5th place (of 14) in their division, a standing that has never been achieved by any previous Royals U9 Girls team. Together, the current U9 A and B teams have more wins than all of the previous Royals U9 Girls teams combined. As a group, the girls are progressing well and should continue improve as they move on.

While they don't have numbers to show, the results for the U8 Boys Select team were just as positive this summer. They finished the Royals' tournament tied for 3rd place in their pool (they played at the U9 level). The Ottawa Royals defeated the Scarborough Azzurri Admirals 1-0. Danielle Vella scored in the 75th minute to secure the win. The team earned the win despite playing the entire second half with only 10 players.

The team can now add the title of 2006 Ontario Champions to their OCSL League Championship (third year running) and 2006 Ottawa Cup.

Danielle returned to top level soccer not long after the birth of her son in April this year. She joins her husband Dom Rochon as winners of the Ontario Cup while wearing an Ottawa Royals uniform. The Men's Premier team won the Ontario Cup in 2004.

The women will represent our club and province in the National Championships which will be held in Surrey, B.C. from October 4th to October 9th.

What a terrific way to celebrate the Ottawa Royals Soccer Club 'Forty Years of Soccer Excellence'! In fact, the team still has one player on the roster, Wilf Grassau, that has been with the team since then.

After years of trying to move up, they have finally earned a promotion to MC2 for next summer. The team would like to thank all the players that helped out this season when they were short:

Keepers
Jonthan Dennis (U17BR)
Jarrod Williams (OISC Div1/MC3)
Andriy Szkwarek (MC4)
Alan Morgan (U17BR)
Hunter Robinz (MRec)
Paolo Tuscano (OT1)
Jonathon LeBlanc (U16BP)

Guest Players
Fred Juett (OT1)
Bradon Betts (MR1)
Smail Salesevic (MR1)
Jonathan Udell (MC4)

Champions at last! This year the Senior Men’s MC3 team tried a new strategy and unleashed a completely unexpected 44 point juggernaut season to secure their first league title in more than a decade of trying. Admittedly, eschewing all pretence of training by mid-May and using only players who could remember ABBA when they were big did not immediately suggest itself as the obvious path to glory, but veteran savvy, a line-up of giants and a dogged determination to win finally proved to be the antidote to years of near misses, questionable administrative rulings and the odd hapless season.

Over the years the faces of the team have changed, with comings, goings, and even some returnees. But the core of us who can remember the teams that began this quest in the early 1990’s can attest that a firm club tradition has been established based upon three fundamental tenets: be proud enough to want to win, be humble enough to laugh at yourself, and under no circumstances recruit those of dubious character. So the deep lore of a team called the Ottawa Spirits is safely preserved along with stories of Perth tournaments, The Hill and The Cones, and newer traditions of Greely-fest and other things best to let lie. Over time our roster sheets have been graced by everyone from Kiwis and Newfoundlanders to the Army, Old World émigrés, bureaucrats, our share of teachers, professors and students, and even those who take physical conditioning seriously. Interestingly, none have ever proved immune to the infectious hilarity of supercharged Scottish profanity.

So still we play on and resist the ever-growing allure of Oldtimers. Thanks to all those who contributed to good times and past campaigns, and more thanks to those who came back. And thanks as well to those not-so-secret ingredients to our success: Red Bull and whatever is on tap

Daniel MacDonald
Ottawa Royals MC3

<sites:pageName>royalsmc3earnpromotion</sites:pageName><sites:revision>3</sites:revision>

U12BP undefeated in league play

2006.09.14

A great end to a great season!

The Ottawa Royals U12 Boys Premier team finished up their season with a silver medal in the Royals tournament and a final league standing of third place.
